Using a Wood Comb Really Help Your Hair and Scalp?

We here at CharlieCurls are constantly researching what hair care approaches are better for our hair. Work to help repair or avoid hair damage and are environmentally better as well. A simple way to start repairing hair naturally is switching to a wooden comb. While trying to avoid harsh detergents and chemicals on your hair and skipping the heat to style. We loved making the switch to a wood comb and learned. A lot speaking with holistic hair stylists and diving deeper into the research. Using a wooden comb, especially to detangle wet hair after a shower and to comb hair before using a CharlieCurl. To create curls and style our hair, has become an essential part of our hair care routine.

Wood combs are better and provide benefits for your hair

Neem Wood

Plastic and metal combs and brushes can cause static in your hair because they have a positive electrical charge. And hair has a negative electrical charge which attracts hair to the comb causing static and/or frizz. Static and frizz allow the hair strand to dry out and become brittle, not to mention it just doesn’t look good. And plastic and low-quality metals are bad for the environment and non renewable unlike wood. Wooden combs can’t conduct electricity, so they keep your hair free from static damage.

A lot of people believe that any kind of plastic can be recycled, but this is false

For starters, plastic combs are just that – plastic. To make plastic, we must extract crude oil from the earth (an unsustainable process in and of itself), then manufacture it into plastic in fossil fuel powered factories that also pollute. To top it all off, most plastic combs come packaged in excessive plastic anyway. If we’re going to break up with fossil fuels, that includes ditching plastic in all its forms – yes, even combs are a part of that. To make matters worse, only 9% of plastic actually gets recycled. Since its creation in the 1950s, we’ve generated over 8.3 billion tons of it (and counting). Truth is, plastic combs are likely too small to properly recycle. It would get lost at a recycling facility.

Plastics release way more toxic chemicals over time than we previously thought, according to a new study, which hurts both people and the planet. And is that what we really want to touch our hair and scalp every day? Combing hair with wood not only feels better (and you’re less likely to hurt your scalp), but it’s healthier for you too.

BENEFITS OF WOODEN COMBS:

Gentle On Hair

Wooden combs are carbon based, just like your hair, skin and scalp. Since both hair and wood have a negative electrical charge, a wooden comb helps your hair lay down and gives it a smooth and glossy look. And since wood is a natural material, it’s not likely to stimulate allergies or skin conditions that using plastic and metal combs can aggravate.

Naturally Nourishes Hair

A wooden comb more easily distributes natural oils from the scalp throughout the entire hair strand because the oils are not sticking instead to the metal or plastic of a regular comb. It leaves your hair less greasy looking and healthier with the shine and bounce of nicely moisturized hair.

Negative Ions are Actually a Positive!

Wood carries a negative iconic charge that matches the hairs on your head, so it lays down the outer part of your hair–the cuticle–making the hair look and feel smoother while sealing in valuable moisture! This smooths out those annoying and bothersome extra flyaways.

Healthy Scalp (Boosts Blood Circulation)

Being carbon based, a wooden comb massages the scalp in a complementary way without bruising or scraping the skin. The scalp likes the feel of the wood (it has a soft feel) which increases blood circulation and healthy oil production. Did you know that our scalps have a range of acupressure points, too? So even sensitive scalps love wood, and the gentle massage calms nerves, quiets the mind and just plain feels good! When the mind is at rest, the body internally and externally is at peace too. It is all about the mind-body connection.

Encourages Hair Growth

We often comb longer with a wooden comb because it feels so good. The massaging action stimulates the follicles to produce more hair strands, increasing hair growth and producing thicker hair.

Prevents Tangles and Breakage

Metal and plastic combs tend to create tangles toward the end of the stroke, whereas a wooden comb doesn’t. As your wooden comb glides smoothly over the scalp and through the hair, de-tangling is easier and breakage and split ends are safely avoided. Also, since you should never brush wet hair, only comb it, you are set there, too.

Helps Reduce Dandruff and Itchy Scalp

Dandruff is the result of scalp irritation. The softer, rounded teeth of a wooden comb won’t nick and cut the scalp or ill-distribute the oils on the scalp and hair, hence less chance of dandruff.

Removes Dirt and Foreign Particles

While you gently comb your hair with wood, dirt and foreign particles are brushed away from the hair. Metal and plastic combs with their high-static charge, allow dirt to stick to them and distribute the dirt over the hair.

Wood Combs Have Great Durability (Sustainable Bamboo is Best)

Wooden combs are strong and durable, often made of bamboo which is a very renewable resource. The teeth rarely break and they are recyclable if they do ever get damaged (hey Fido, leave that comb alone).  Sustainable bamboo wood is used for most wood hair brushes and combs (be sure to check that it is 100% bamboo).  A better option for our planet, making it the ideal choice for eco-centric consumers (our Wooden Comb is 100% sustainably-grown bamboo).

Suitable for All Types of Hair

No matter what your hair type is, wooden combs are like mothers that care for your hair. They treat gently and support overall hair health for all the reasons mentioned above (and likely more).
